Public Health Optometry is a specialized residency (fellowship) program designed to equip optometrists with the knowledge and skills to address population eye-care needs. The program focuses on disease prevention, health education, promotion, and protection, encompassing communication, occupational health, and industrial optometry.
To prepare specialist Optometrists to function flexibly and effectively in leadership roles in a wide variety of public eye health and academic/research settings.
To advance public health optometry through comprehensive training, research, and community engagement that addresses population-based eye care needs.
The program is offered in two parts, lasting a minimum of four years. Part I focuses on foundational coursework in key areas of the specialty, while Part II emphasizes independent studies, public health laboratory and field postings, and community vision screening projects.
