Every NPCO fellowship follows a common two-part framework. Within it, each faculty sets the course schedule and credit loading for its own specialty.

The Two-Part Framework

Part I · Years 1–2

Foundational and core specialty coursework

  • Core subjects of the chosen specialty
  • Research methods and biostatistics
  • Supervised clinical rotations
  • Professional practice and ethics
Part II · Years 3–4

Advanced practice, research and dissertation

  • Advanced clinical and field postings
  • Independent study in the specialty
  • Original research project
  • Dissertation writing and defence

How Residents Are Assessed

  • Continuous assessment across taught courses
  • Clinical logbook and supervisor reports from each posting
  • Part I professional examination — written, clinical and oral components
  • Part II professional examination
  • Dissertation submission and oral defence before a panel of examiners
